I was so excited to hear about the new Marimekko flagship store which just opened as part of their 60th anniversary celebrations, right across the street from the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park (at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway). We of course, had to visit the other day and I thought it wonderful! But that’s no surprise because I love Scandinavian design and have always loved Marimekko. This iconic Finnish company which exploded onto the world scene in 1951 with their bold and colorful textiles, fashions, and home accessories, has made a huge comeback in recent years, most notably through their collaboration with retailer Crate & Barrel. Its patterns and colors were made famous already in the sixties by Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis and this new 4,000-square-foot shop full of all Marimekko’s product lines from bags to children’s clothing and decoration will be sure to impose its aesthetic anew.
The really great thing that if you are not a sewer but really want something made of their amazing fabrics, there’s an in-house seamstress at the store who has her own station to make custom items. And don’t fret if you’re not in New York City, Marimekko’s newly launched online shop has a great selection of their products.
Below are just a couple of their many kid’s products that I like – Bo boo kids set, Karkulaiset Bib
