What an unusual photo exhibition by Finnish photographer Riitta Ikonen and Norwegian photographer Karoline Hjorth. I am really fascinated by it and these people in it really are Bellissima Kids!
The photographs in Eyes as Big as Plates play with references from American folklore. Each image presents a solitary figure in a landscape, dressed in elements from surroundings that indicate a sense of timelessness and universality. This blending of figure and ground recalls the way in which folk narratives animate the natural world through a personification of nature. The elderly figures in the landscapes suggests a return to the earth, a celebration of lives lived, reinforcing the link between humanity and the natural world. What a timely exhibit for the spring and the new life bursting forth.
Eyes as Big as Plates Recess in Red Hook in Brooklyn through April 26, 2013.
