Chairs, Chairs, Chairs

What a marvelous sight! Doris Salcedo used 1600 chairs in the making of this tremendous work of urban art. She puts her work right in public view, displacing a space people normally think of as empty to send her political, economic and historical messages. By the writing on that sign, this happening took place somewhere in Turkey.

I love chairs. I really love chairs, and not just as a place to rest our weary bones, although, of course that’s a big part of it. At one point, I was thinking of becoming a chair designer – maybe I still will do this one day. So, I thought I’d do a post just all about chairs! Why not?

A Chair for Alberto Moravia by my old friend, the illustrious artist Paul Harmon who also loves chairs and did a whole series on them. We used to hob knob in Paris when we were both living there – I would go to his “salons” – that’s a fancy word for receptions! Now, the interesting story behind this painting is that Paul liked a photo of this chair I took in the south of Italy so much that he did a painting of it! You know I ♥ that! But more on Paul later as he is an upcoming “Angle on Artist” here at Bellissima.

Mr. Painter chair by award winning designer Paul Sandip. This original kid’s chair is filled with yellow polystyrene balls that dance around when the chair is shaken, which we’re sure the kiddos will do. It comes in three great colors.

Love these ingenious folding Flux, Dutch designed chairs. They fold completely flat and you can mount them on the wall. Here is their new Flux Junior size.

What a wonderful piece this Vitra Eames Elephant: it’s a chair and toy all at once. Charles and Ray Eames 1945 designed a toy elephant made of plywood. However, it never made it into mass production. The Eames elephant is now available for the first time in a plastic version. Available here.

The Kapsule Chair by Karim Rashid won a Silver level Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) and I can see why. Very cool and comfortable for the kids, a compact size and is hollow for storage.

What adorable rocking chairs in The P’kolino Safari Collection!
